So what actually is the Internet?
The Internet is a global network of computers and devices connected to each other through a shared set of communication rules called protocols. Think of it as the physical and logical infrastructure — the cables, routers, satellites, data centers, and the agreed-upon languages that let machines talk to one another across the planet.
It carries many different services: email, file transfers, video calls, online gaming, and yes, the World Wide Web. None of those services are the Internet itself — they all run on top of it, the way phone calls and text messages both run on the same mobile network without being the same thing.
And what is the World Wide Web, then?
The World Wide Web is one specific service that runs over the Internet. It is a system of interlinked documents and resources — web pages, images, videos, and files — that you access through a browser using addresses that start with http:// or https://.
Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web in 1989 while working at CERN. His idea was to connect documents together using hyperlinks so researchers could jump between related information easily. That idea scaled up into the billions of pages you browse today, but it is still just one application riding on the Internet's infrastructure.
What is the difference between Internet and WWW, in plain terms?
The simplest way to put it: the Internet is the road network; the Web is one type of vehicle that travels on it. Email would be another vehicle. A file downloaded over FTP would be another. They all share the same roads, but they are not the same thing.
When people say "I looked it up on the Internet," they usually mean they searched the Web. That mix-up is understandable because for most people, the Web is how they experience the Internet. But engineers, developers, and network administrators keep the distinction clear because it matters when something goes wrong — a broken website is a Web problem; an outage that also kills your email is likely an Internet problem.
Which is bigger, Internet or WWW?
The Internet is bigger. The Web is a subset of the Internet, not the other way around. Everything on the Web is on the Internet, but plenty of Internet traffic never touches the Web at all.
Consider how much data moves around that has nothing to do with web pages: corporate email servers exchanging messages, IoT sensors reporting temperature readings, multiplayer game servers syncing player positions, or your phone backing up photos to cloud storage. All of that is Internet traffic. Very little of it involves a browser or a URL. The Web is enormous in its own right, but it is one layer within a much larger system.
Do I need to understand this difference in everyday life?
Honestly, not for most tasks. If you just want to check the news or shop online, the distinction will not affect you. Where it does matter is when something breaks or when someone is trying to sell you something under a misleading label.
For example, some internet service providers advertise "Internet access" but throttle or restrict certain types of traffic — knowing that the Internet includes more than just web browsing helps you ask the right questions. Similarly, if a website is down but your email still works, you can immediately tell it is a Web issue, not an Internet outage. That kind of basic literacy saves time and frustration.
What is the difference between "www" and "website"?
The www you see at the start of a web address is a subdomain, not a separate thing from the website itself. A website is a collection of web pages belonging to a person, company, or organization. The "www" is simply a naming convention that historically indicated the server hosting those pages was part of the World Wide Web.
Most websites today work identically with or without it. Typing example.com and www.example.com into your browser will usually land you on the same page because the site owner has set up a redirect. Who invented each one, and does that help explain the difference?
The Internet grew out of ARPANET, a U.S. Defense Department project from the late 1960s, and was shaped over the following decades by researchers, universities, and standards bodies. No single person invented it. Tim Berners-Lee, on the other hand, is specifically credited with inventing the World Wide Web in 1989–1991.
That history underlines the distinction neatly. The Internet already existed for roughly twenty years before the Web was built on top of it. Berners-Lee did not build a new network — he built a new way of sharing and navigating information across the network that already existed. The Web made the Internet accessible to ordinary people, which is why the two get conflated so often.
Are there parts of the Internet that are not on the Web at all?
Yes, and there are more of them than most people realize. Email (SMTP/IMAP/POP3), file transfers (FTP/SFTP), secure shell connections (SSH), Voice over IP calls, peer-to-peer file sharing, and most app-to-server communication all run over the Internet without using the Web's HTTP protocol or involving a browser.
There is also a frequently misunderstood concept called the dark web, which is part of the Web (it uses HTTP and browsers, specifically Tor Browser) but is not indexed by standard search engines. It is distinct from the broader "dark Internet," which refers to network infrastructure that is not publicly accessible at all. These terms get muddled constantly, but the underlying rule stays the same: the Web is one slice of the Internet, defined by the use of HTTP and hyperlinks.
Is the Web getting smaller relative to the Internet?
Arguably, yes. As more devices connect to the Internet — smart home gadgets, industrial sensors, connected vehicles, wearables — a growing share of Internet traffic is machine-to-machine communication that never involves a browser or a web page. The Web remains dominant for human-facing content, but the Internet is expanding into territory the Web was never designed to cover.
This is one reason the distinction between the Internet and the World Wide Web is becoming more relevant over time, not less. Understanding that the Web is a service on top of the Internet helps make sense of why your smart thermostat can lose its connection to the manufacturer's server without any web page being involved.
